Jeremy Strayer
Co-Lead PI

Jeremy is co-lead PI for MODULE(S2), and he works closely with the Professional Development and Research teams. Jeremy has held faculty positions in higher education since 1996, teaching mathematics, statistics, and technology courses. His teaching and research interests have included understanding the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching and the professional development of teachers. 

Howard Gobstein
CO-LEAD PI

Howard Gobstein is Executive Vice
President of APLU, responsible for research policy and STEM education. He spent the first 11 years of his career designing and leading evaluations of government science programs and policies with the U.S. Government Accountability Office. He was named the distinguished alumni of 2010 by the Purdue School of Engineering Education and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Engineering at Purdue University and a Master’s degree in Science, Technology, and Public Policy at George Washington University.

Alyson E. Lischka
CO-PI

Alyson Lischka is a co-author of the
Geometry Writing Team and the leader of the MODULE(S2) Research Action Cluster for the Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership (MTEP), out of which this project grew. She is also a contributing member of the Research Team and has presented these materials and research on the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching at various conferences. Alyson serves on the MTEP Leadership team and continues to lead efforts to support instructors in taking up materials that connect upper-level content courses to the work of K-12 teaching. She is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at Middle Tennessee State University.

Andrew Ross
CO-PI

Andrew is part of the writing team
for the Statistics modules. His background is in Operations Research, which uses math, statistics, and optimization to help organizations make better decisions. Andrew also teaches classes and advises students in Data Science and Analytics. Andrew is a professor at Eastern Michigan University in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Emina Alibegovic
CO-PI

Emina Alibegovic started her work
with MTE-P in 2014. She participated and led the Research Action Cluster, at the time called Building Communities and Courses, through the identification of the needed materials and experiences for preservice teachers. That initial work grew into MODULE(S2) in their current form. Emina was the lead author of the Geometry materials. She continues her work through the collaboration with the writing and research teams on editing and improving the materials.

Stephanie Casey
CO-PI

Stephanie is a a member of the
Statistics Writing Team, serving as co-author of the Statistics Modules. She is also a member of the Professional Development Team, planning and offering training and support for faculty members who are teaching with MODULE(S2) curriculum materials. She is a professor at Eastern Michigan University in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Yvonne Lai
CO-PI

Yvonne Lai is the founding chair of 
the MAA’s Special Interest Group on Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching (SIGMAA-MKT), a member of the writing team for Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations, and was part of the implementation team for the Ypsilanti Algebra Project site. She leads the MODULE(S2) research team, and co-authored Algebra Module 1 and Algebra Module 2.

Brynja Kohler
CO-PI

Brynja Kohler is a member of the mathematical modeling writing team and the professional development team for MODULE(S2), and she also leads Utah’s MTEP 2.0 Networked Improvement Community.  She combines collaborative work with inservice and preservice teachers for mathematics teaching improvement and research developing data-driven mathematical models of biological phenomena. 

Cynthia Anhalt
Co-Lead PI

Cynthia Oropesa Anhalt is a member of the Writing Team for the Mathematical Modeling Modules and a member of the research team for the MODULE(S2) project. She is an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Director of the Secondary Mathematics Education Program at the University of Arizona. Her research interests are in mathematical modeling in mathematics curriculum and teacher education with an emphasis in mathematical knowledge for teaching, specifically in mathematical modeling within social justice contexts and equitable teaching practices.

Jason Aubrey
CO-LEAD PI

Jason Aubrey is a member of the Algebra Writing Team for the MODULE(S2) project. He is the Director of the Mathematics Center at The University of Arizona. His research interests are in ordered fields.

Ricardo Cortez
Modeling Writer/
Advisory Board

Ricardo Cortez is a member of the writing team for the Mathematical Modeling modules and a member of the Board of Advisors for the MODULE(S2) project. He is a Professor in the mathematics department at Tulane University in New Orleans. His research interests are in applied mathematics, mathematical and computational modeling, and mathematical modeling in K-12.

Cody Patterson
Algebra Consultant

Cody L. Patterson is a member of the algebra writing team. He is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Texas State University; his research focuses on mathematical knowledge for teaching at the secondary level. In addition to teaching preservice and inservice teachers, he serves as a co-editor of the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education in Texas, a publication of AMTE-TX, and is a member of the leadership team for the San Antonio Community for Inquiry in Teaching (SA-COMMIT).

James Hart
Algebra Consultant

Dr. Hart’s research interests lie in
ordered algebraic structures. Having published papers in theoretical computer science, lattice theory, and graph theory, Dr. Hart wants to share his love of mathematics with new generations of students; consequently, he is excited to be part of the algebra writing team for MODULES(S2). He has particularly enjoyed the chance to “think outside of the box” with team members Yvonne Lai, Cody Patterson, and Jason Aubrey as they explore new ways of allowing students to weave together the many strands of algebraic thinking.

James Tuttle
Teacher Consultant

James Tuttle has been teaching high school math and physics for the past 15 years, and is currently on the faculty of the Washtenaw Technical Middle College in Ann Arbor, MI. James works with the algebra writing team as a K12 math consultant

John Womack
Teacher Consultant

John Womack is part of the mathematical
modeling team. He has taught middle school and high school mathematics for the last 18 years. He helped give a classroom perspective to the group and tried many of the modeling activities in his secondary school classes.

Michael Weiss
Geometry Consultant

Michael Weiss is a Lecturer in the University of Michigan Department of Mathematics who formerly served on the faculties of both Oakland University and Michigan State University. An alumnus of the University of Michigan, his research focuses on the ways in which the practices of high school mathematics can (and cannot) cultivate elements of a mathematical sensibility. He is a member of the MODULE(S2) Geometry writing team, and a piloter of the MODULE(S2) Algebra materials. He is also the author of the recently-published textbook _Secondary Mathematics for Mathematicians and Educators: A View from Above_ (Routledge, 2020).

Samantha Maddox
TEACHER CONSULTANT

Samantha Maddox is a high school math teacher from Athens, Georgia with 10 years of experience. Samantha works with the Statistics Writing Team as their K12 Math Consultant.

WILL TIDWELL
Modeling team

Will Tidwell is an Assistant Professor at Morehead State University who joined the Modeling Team while he was a graduate student at Utah State University. 

Lindsay Czap
Graduate Research Assistant

Lindsay Czap is a doctoral student in the Mathematics and
Science Education at Middle Tennessee State University. On the MODULE(S2) team, she acts as data manager, works alongside the Research Team, works as website manager, and assists the Geometry writing team as a copy editor.

Chris Bonnesen Graduate Research Assistant

Chris Bonnesen is a doctoral student in the Mathematics and Science Education at Middle Tennessee State University. On the MODULE(S2) team, he acts as data manager and works alongside the Research Team—leading the scoring of instruments, analyzing data, and contributing to manuscripts. He is interested in the nature of mathematics and teaching through problem solving.
